Forestry and Agrifoods
The following section provides information on a variety of programs and funding opportunities related to the natural resource sector.
Based on advice from the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture and the Newfoundland and Labrador Horticultural Producers Council, the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources has been accepting applications for the 2019 Vegetable Transplant Program since January 2019 to accommodate farmers’ early planning schedules.
Due to the exceptional popularity of this program, the department is making in excess of 1.5 million vegetable transplants available to commercial farmers in 2019 – almost seven times more than the 250,000 transplants provided in 2018. Applications for these transplants have met or exceeded available supply for 2019, and applications are now closed as per our intended schedule.
In 2018, more than 250,000 onion, kohlrabi, brussels sprout, kale and leek transplants produced at the Centre for Agriculture and Forestry Development were distributed to 25 commercial vegetable producers throughout the province and distributed via the department’s Agri-Truck.
Producers indicated their overall satisfaction with the program, including the quality of transplants provided. Based on their response, the department has added broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and rutabaga (turnip) to the list of available transplants in 2019.
The Vegetable Transplant Program is an important component in the Provincial Government’s Way Forward commitment to increase food self-sufficiency, support new entrants and create jobs in the agriculture industry.
